Session 1

Listen, learn and share session

Engagement: the bedrock of any development programme (for delegates who are new to development)

Chasing just the money is a sure-fire way to turn off your community. People (being people) value relationships that are reciprocal, respectful, and rewarding. So, what does best practice look like when it comes to running an engagement programme? This interactive session will explore how to build strong networks that the whole school community can contribute to and benefit from.

Speakers: Tara George, Development and Alumni Engagement Director, St Benedict's Independent Day School; Kathrin Ostermann, Director of Development and Alumni Relations, City of London School

Listen, learn and share session

Regular giving: building from the base up (for delegates who are new to development)

You know that you should probably 'do regular giving', but how, and most importantly, why?! There are several important steps to building a successful regular giving programme and we'll take you through what this journey might look like for you, whether you're starting from scratch, or you already have foundations in place. We'll share honest advice, practical tips and our insight into what works and what definitely doesn't. You'll leave understanding why a regular giving programme matters and what you need to do to make regular giving work for you, and your school.

Speaker: Lisa Connor, Head of Development and Alumni Relations, Merchant Taylors', Crosby

Listen, learn and share session

Strategy development: scribbles, stakeholders and success

All good strategies start with ambitions, ideas, inspiration and best practice. This interactive session will help you take all those scribbled notes, give you a template for your strategy, onboard stakeholders, and ensure your strategy helps you to deliver on your vision.

Speakers: Becki Mckinlay, Director of External Relations, Monkton Combe School; Saira Uppal, Director of Development and Social Impact, Dragon School

Listen, learn and share session

The power of prospect management: research, systems and insight

Who are your prospects? How do you know if you are spending your time with the right prospects? And how can you demonstrate the value of your prospects to your leadership? Many development teams have limited resource for prospect management, yet choosing to dedicate the resource you have in the right way can create a real step change in your development success. This interactive session will explore how to use data to manage and prioritise your prospects, how to develop understanding of prospect management across your leadership team, and how, through effective prospect management support, you can upscale your fundraising efforts.

Speakers: Christian Propper, Associate Director (Club and Campaign), Marlborough College; Adriana Williams, Director of Development and Alumnae Relations, Marymount International School, London

12:10 - 12:40

Coffee with sponsors and exhibitors

Session 2

Case study session

Partnerships: how do they add value to development?

Partnerships at St Edward's School, Oxford sits within the wider remit of the development team and as such provides great opportunity for engagement, but also significant distraction from the core task. But what is the core task with these competing priorities and can one area truly help the other?

Speaker: Rachael Henshilwood, Director of Partnerships and Development, St Edward's, Oxford

Case study session

The art of war in marketing: strategic planning and proactive communication for success

Join Katy Steventon, Director of The Rugbeian Community at Rugby School, as she shares her experience of working as a marketing strategist for the British Army. Katy will be discussing the strategies she implements when launching Rugbeian Community projects, and giving insight into how these can help translate messages and shift mindsets. The session will also focus on understanding a team's capabilities, building psychological safety, and managing your stakeholders to get the best out of people. Using analogies from her military background, Katy will provide practical tips for implementing these strategies in school development teams. Attendees will learn how to work efficiently, utilise team members' skills, and communicate their plans effectively.

Speaker: Katy Steventon, Director of the Rugbeian Community, Rugby School

Sponsored by ToucanTech

Case study session

We're all in this together

The two Haberdashers' Elstree Schools have operated independently for nearly 150 years, evolving quite distinct school cultures. One thing they have had in common: minimal fundraising.

It is perhaps remarkable, then, that over the last two years philanthropy has played a key role in bringing Habs Boys and Habs Girls together. Staff, students, parents, Old Haberdashers and volunteers from both schools are rallying to support transformational bursaries and other Habs priorities. The schools are seeing their best-ever fundraising results, with many hundreds of new donors and record giving totals. Historically, gifts came almost exclusively from alumni, but are now also being made by parents, governors, leadership and staff.

Join Habs Elstree Director of Development Bill Friar as he uses the Habs experience to show how a clear case for support, ambitious long-term strategy, internal buy-in and long hours at parents' guild meetings can build a culture of philanthropy and social inclusion an entire school community can get behind.

Speaker: Bill Friar, Director of Development, Haberdashers' Elstree Schools

Case study session

Working with your alumni association

The relationship between alumni associations and development offices look, sound and feel different in every institution. With different histories and individuals in every instance, there is no one size fits all approach in how to work cohesively or productively. At Dulwich College, Trevor Llewelyn, Secretary of the Old Alleynian Association, works closely with the Director of Development and the school. Together, the two functions support and add value. At Eastbourne College, what was the alumni organisation, the Old Eastbournian Association (OEA), has been absorbed into the Eastbournian Society, which sits alongside the charity's development function. Membership of The Eastbournian Society is made up of all alumni, parents, parents of former pupils, staff past and present, and other friends of the school. Join Emma Garrett, Development Director, and Trevor as they speak about their experiences, how their approach works at their institution, and lessons learned along the way.

Speakers: Emma Garrett, Development Director, Eastbourne College; Trevor Llewelyn, Secretary, Old Alleynian Association

Session 3

Horizon session

Building trust with marginalised communities

The fear and fatigue of discrimination can make it difficult for marginalised communities to engage with organisations, especially if their community is under-represented or unacknowledged by those within it. Using the concept of allyship, this session will explore different interventions to engage with alumni and other stakeholders from all communities.

Speaker: Lou Chiu, Culture and Relationships Coach and Consultant, Lou Chiu Coaching and Consultancy

Horizon session

Educating for social good: raising the next generation of philanthropists, social actors and community leaders

This session is founded on a fundamental premise: that schools have a moral duty to help cultivate critically reflective, socially-aware, justice-orientated philanthropic citizens. Whilst there is much activity to celebrate in schools that works towards this aim, there are still significant gaps in practice. In this interactive session, we weave together theory, research and participants' practical experiences to consider how do we 'educate for social good'.

Speakers: Dr Alison Body, Senior Lecturer in Philanthropic Studies and Social Policy, and Dr Fiona Fairbairn, Associate Lecturer and Researcher in Philanthropic Studies, Centre for Philanthropy, University of Kent

Horizon session

How the permacrisis has impacted on donor giving behaviour

The economic squeeze is part of a series of crises which have created a sense of helplessness that has had a profound impact on giving behaviour. Using up-to-date research findings, we'll show how the education sector should respond to enhance their fundraising offers to engage more supporters who will give more committed support.

Speaker: Mark Phillips, Owner, Bluefrog Fundraising Ltd

Chains of habit: incorporating prospect research into your every day

When you are trying to run multiple parts of your school's fundraising operations - the database, comms, perhaps even face-to-face fundraising - prospect research can feel like just another add-on to an already squeezed role, yet it could be the key to growing your fundraising. This session will focus on six practical tips and examples for how you can make a habit of prospect research by incorporating it into your everyday activities.

Speaker: Joanna Carr, Head of Prospect Research, King's College London

Six steps to success session

Engaging alumni through your shared history

Alumni and institutions have one thing in common, shared history, and whilst many institutions harness this connection through reunions and events, there is often very little done with it in the digital domain. This session will examine how The Duke of York's Royal Military School took the benefits of a historical archive and merged them with the best parts of social media to grow their community.

Speakers: Jamie Robertson, Managing Director, the social archive; Rachel Robinson, Alumni and Development Officer, The Duke of York's Royal Military School

Sponsored by the social archive

Six steps to success session

Are development boards ever effective?

Development boards, when effective, raise the profile of a fundraising campaign and increase engagement within circles of wealth and influence; when less effective, they can be a drain on your time and resource.
